👁️ How Rare Are Green Eyes? Only 2% of People
Where Green Eyes Are Most Common
Green eyes are most concentrated in Northern and Central Europe, with the highest rates in Ireland (~20% of the population), Scotland (~15%), Iceland, and parts of Scandinavia. They're also found in pockets of Central Asia and among Pashtun populations in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Outside these regions, green eyes are extremely uncommon.
The Genetics Explained
Green eyes result from a combination of moderate melanin in the iris stroma, the presence of lipochrome (a yellow pigment), and Rayleigh scattering of light. Unlike brown eyes (high melanin) or blue eyes (very low melanin), green requires a precise middle ground. Multiple genes contribute, including OCA2, HERC2, and SLC24A4.
